Hello fellow garden enthusiasts! My name is Mohammed Harris and I am a budding molecular geneticist in addition to being an avid gardener! This year (2012), I decided to chronicle the makings of my garden from start to finish. I want to share with you the makings of my simple, economical and fruitful garden that anyone can create at home.
Besides playing basketball and studying genetics, gardening has been a passion since my early childhood. It’s a thing of beauty to watch a plant bearing fruit come to life from such a small seed. I look at care and maintenance as an enjoyable hobby rather than a dreaded chore. It’s also very relaxing and peaceful, and the creativity aspect of designing and planning is very exciting.
My parents were raised in third-world villages in southern India and relied on subsistence and organic farming for sustenance. They told me stories about surviving minimally, from raising cows and chickens for milk and eggs to growing mango trees and other various food plants. Naturally, I was shocked, as I grew up in the United States for most of my life and could simply walk into a grocery store for my needs. However, I became attracted to the idea of subsistence and organic farming and am a moderate believer in the primacy of self-sufficiency and promoting a more eco-friendly environment. I am not perfect in “going green” but I try to do my part as best as I can. In the end, I hope to “reap the fruits of my labor”, both literally in my garden and metaphorically in my life.
